I don't mind being a bench warmer!

Last Friday marked the last physical therapy appointment for 2010 for Miss Angelina.  Her therapist brought along a bench to work with during their session in our play room.  I was downstairs and Joanna, the PT, called down to me to get my camera and get up there quickly!  So that's what I did, I grabbed the camera and flew up the stairs.  This is what I found waiting for me.....

Whose the big girl??  I'M THE BIG GIRL!

I don't need any help sitting on this bench!

That's right...I can even play with my toys!

Look Ma...no hands!

Side to side doesn't bother me either!

I was so excited to see her sitting UNSUPPORTED on a backless bench!  She was able to follow the toy from side to side and bring her arms up to play with it without falling.  She held on for about 10 minutes before Joanna ever had to lay a hand on her to keep her upright.

So proud of you Angelina Ballerina!

Shots, shots and more shots!

Friday I had the unfortunate experience of taking all three kids to the doctor's office.  This was the first time I had to take them all to see the pedi BY MYSELF!  I was nervous at how it was all going to play out - would they behave, would they scream and whine, would I lose my sanity??  Well, I was pretty impressed with this bunch.  They were all very well behaved, to my surprise!  Brady and Cirstyn were nice to each other playing on the jungle gym in the waiting room.  They listened to me when it was our turn and didn't whine about not wanting to leave the fun area.  Cirstyn had her 18 month visit and let Dr. Guthrie check her out without objections.  She's on track, not that I expected anything different.  Cirstyn now in weighing in at 22.4 lbs and is 33.5" tall!  So she's still 10 and 90% just like her big brother - TALL AND SKINNY!   Now was the hard part....SHOTS!  They all needed flu shots while Cirstyn had to have her 18 month battery of shots as well.  I explained to Brady that he had to be brave to show his sisters that it was going to be okay.  He was proud that he was the big brother and he put on his best brave face.  Yes there were tears, but they were short lived.  He did manage to let the nurse know that she "hurt his feelings" but in just a few minutes he was fine.  Now it was Angelina's turn, and seeing how she was in her wheelchair they gave her her first arm shot.  Again, there were tears but she recovered in no time!  Such a big girl!  Now it was drama queen's turn....4 shots, 2 in each thigh, total devastation!  Cirstyn cried lots of tears, but in just a short while then she was able to put a smile on her face and we could leave the office.  They were all smiles leaving, Brady and Cirstyn telling the nurses bye-bye's and see you later's.  I was never so glad to just get everyone in the car and sit for a minute.  It was exhausting!  We did get a sucker for being brave, well some of us did, and sang Christmas songs all the way home!

A family that Tricks together Treats together...Happy Halloween!

This Halloween the kids had such a good time!  First we trick-or-treated our block, then we headed out to the First Baptist Church of Saginaw for their fall festival with Nana and Papa.  There were lots of games, treats and a bouncy house!  They all had such a great time and looked so adorable!  Cirstyn wore the Minnie Mouse outfit, Angelina was "good" witch, and Brady became Buzz Lightyear (to the rescue!).

The next night we got dressed again and headed out to Grams and Papa's to have treats as well!  The pictures are too cute....

Meet the Mom Next Door - DFW Thrive Magazine article

I am a subscriber to DFW Thrive magazine.  It's not like Vogue, Martha Stewart Living or other commercial publications like those.  It's a special needs resource or reference publication and has lots of different but equally applicable information and service providers.  I happen to "Like" them on Facebook as well.  I have commented on posts that were applicable or interesting and let them know when I actually was able to put some information to work for us.

So in August I was approached via Facebook personal message by the editor of DFW Thrive Magazine to be featured as the "Mom Next Door" in their Fall 2010 issue.  I thought, "hmm...k"  but was very intrigued.  I don't particularly think that I am all that special and unique.  I mean there are lots of moms out there that have a special needs child (or 2) and other children as well, hold a full-time job, go to school, help with church or PTA or whatever.  There are more that have a lot more going on in their lives than I do.  But I thought, what they heck, so I did it!

I met with Jenny Vitucci who put this story together.  She was so warm and inviting, asking lots of questions.  She was totally into my story.  I mean, recalling all that had happened and how we got to where we are now, I didn't ever cry even though many memories are still so raw.  She met Angelina and was immediately taken by her.  Who wouldn't be right??  She's so beautiful and smiling so big.  A happy girl!

We met with a photographer at the Fort Worth Science and History Museum for photos.  It was so unimaginably hot outside as it was early September and they wanted to shoot in the only outdoor area in the museum....a closed in heat box!  Angelina and I went first for photos for the cover and I mean to tell you we were sweating so badly!  Forget hair being fixed and having any volume....the sweat and humidity took all that out!  The pictures with the whole family were fun when the kids were cooperating but I can't even explain how flipping hot it was that day!

Anyway, I wanted to make sure this made it on to the blog so I wouldn't forget.

This is not the most incredible thing that I've ever done, but I think it's by far the coolest!

Here is the article.....

Andrea Safford, Eagle Mountain mom of three (Bradyn, 3; Angelina, 3; and Cirstyn, 1) sits at a table in the corner of the waiting room at Johnson Family Therapy Center in Richardson. We’re here because daughter Angelina is undergoing a new treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in hopes of honing her abilities to make simple actions (like sitting or crawling) easier for her to do.

I have a laundry list of questions ready for Safford, but before I even get to them, she opens up to me with the details of their life—the good, the bad and even the just plain ugly.

Tears well up in her eyes as she recounts the birth of her twins, son Bradyn and daughter Angelina. Six months into Safford’s pregnancy, she and husband Larry were told that, although Bradyn was healthy, Angelina was not thriving in the womb. Ten days later and only 27 weeks into her pregnancy, they got just a quick glimpse at their newborns before they were both rushed to the NICU. Safford recalls weeks and months filled with uncertainty—and heartache—as little Angelina struggled for life. She describes feeling helpless. “Larry and I just kept asking God to let her come home to us,” she says.

And, one day, their prayers were answered. Angelina was released from the hospital and joined twin brother Bradyn (who was released after only 11 weeks) at home … but not without complications. Safford speaks with a calm, almost serene composure as she shares Angelina’s diagnosis: spastic quadriparesis, static encephalopathy, epilepsy and dystonia cerebral palsy. While in incubation in the NICU, Angelina suffered brain damage. It’s a sobering diagnosis—one that would make any mom’s heart ache.

“Would you like to come back and see her?” Safford suddenly asks.

She walks me into the back room where Angelina is undergoing therapy. The first thing I notice about the 3-year-old is her smile. Like mom’s, it’s contagious. Sandy-blond ponytails bounce as she playfully kicks her legs into the air. She is happy.

Safford looks on lovingly, her motherly pride as immense as Angelina’s Texas-sized smile … and I get a sense that in this moment … all is well.

Although they still have those days, Safford admits, she says life is far less intense. Much to the relief of the entire family, life is delivering better news these days. And Safford is quick to point out, “Good news means less drama.

Less drama also means a little more time for herself—so much so that Safford is taking classes online. “I’m studying to be a nurse,” she says. “I mean I should do something with all the medical stuff I’ve learned through all this!” And somehow, with her easy laughter, I get the feeling she’s never been one to take herself too seriously. Humor, she says, is “what got us through some of our darkest days.” The picture Safford paints of her husband is heroic, and it’s clear their journey together has only strengthened their bond. “When Angelina was diagnosed, one of the nurses told us to brace ourselves—that this is the type of thing that can crumble a marriage.”

But the opposite seems true for this couple. After meeting in high school, the two married and spent a little over a decade enjoying their time as a man and wife—life was uncomplicated and all about each other, says Safford. “We decided that, when it was time to start a family, that was it. Everything would be about them.” These days, she says, their free time is spent with their kids, playing outdoors in the backyard or “15 minutes down the road” at her grandmother’s farm. And as she describes their day-to-day life, I get the picture of a woman who’s content, joyful and wise—one who takes pleasure in matters of the heart. “You find out what’s really important to you. … Everything superficial—there’s just no time for it—it gets left behind. I discovered what I was made of,” admits Safford.

And what is this Texas mom made of? From our bird’s-eye view: true grit—it’s not just for Clint Eastwood flicks after all.

Cirstyn's 1st Trip to the Dentist!

Cirstyn Delaney had her very first trip to the dentist and she did great!  Dr. Sewell was very sweet and told her what a big girl she was not to cry or fight so he could take a look at her beautiful toothies.  Larry actually took her to this first appointment as I was in Dallas with Ms. Angelina.  I think he enjoyed getting to take Cirstyn to a "first" because it's usually momma doing those things.  Great Job Cirstyn!

HBOT and in home therapy for Angelina going well!

About a month ago we finally got in home therapy going for Angelina. Openings became available for PT and ST so no more going to Cook Children's for therapy!  Her new therapists are fairly young which is a big change from before, but we are open to their forward thinking and usage of new applications and techniques.  She has adjusted quite well to them also.  This cuts down a great deal on travel time to and from therapy appointments since it seems everyone in the house has got something going when school starts.

Angelina has been going to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in North Dallas-Richardson area.  It's much better this time around as far as traveling and time spent at that office.  She is going for 90 minutes one time per for 30 days day rather than 60 minutes two times per day for 20 days.  We go more days, but it's worth it not to have to be gone for 7 hours each day!  It also allows me to take her in the morning before Larry goes to work so we don't have to schedule someone to stay with Brady and Cirstyn.  I'd much rather save babysitting time for going out!

Both her PT and ST have notice an improvement already in her cognition since going to HBOT.  It's hard for me to tell right now because I'm with her all day, so I'm glad to have such a positive confirmation in such a short amount of time.  Angelina's been taking steps on her own with little assistance - only holding her upright.  She's been making decisions between toys to play with by using a switch device to pick what she wants as well!  It's pretty cool to see her making improvements especially when it's so hot no one wants to do anything but lounge around!

There's lots more to update on but I just had to share while I had a free moment!

Baby Update

I just wanted to let you guys know what was happening with me.  Sunday I started spotting heavily so I went in to see my OB on Monday.  I was worked in to the on-call OB and she did a blood draw and a sono.  I was supposed to be 7 weeks but measuring 5 weeks.  They said it was too early to see a heart beat or detect an embryo, but I've seen enough sono pics to know what I was looking at. The baby had passed.  We went back in yesterday to see my doc and even though the nurse said he wouldn't do a sono, he did just to reassure me.  I was right, it was over.  The good thing is that I don't have to go back in and do a surgical D & C since it looks like it's happening as nature intended.

It's disappointing as we were just starting to get used to the idea, but it's not the end of the world and we have three beautiful faces to remind us of that. Thanks everyone for supporting us, we appreciate it!  Now it's back to Plan A...

Yes, it's true....Baby #4 is on it's way!

A couple of days ago Larry and I were surprised with news that I am pregnant with our "D" baby!  We thought that we would be able to only tell our parents but as you can see that didn't last too long.  After Mandy's FB post about her weird dream I really started to pay attention to what could be early signs, but still thought that it's probably in my head.  Now it all makes sense, the sleepiness, an all-of-a-sudden poochy tummy and a bit of irritability equated to a new baby!

Well now that it has had a little time to sink in that we are going to be parents again we have been explaining to the kids that a baby is in Mommy's tummy.  Angelina and Cirstyn don't quite get it yet, but Brady sure does know where the baby is!  It's so cute, he'll come right up to me and pat my tummy and say "There's a baby in there!"  Sometimes when we ask him he says he wants another baby, but sometimes he says no more babies!  Too bad Brady, Baby "D" is coming sweet boy - the best you can do now is hope for a brother!  It look's like our estimated due date is February 27, 2011.  A & B will have just turned 4 and C will be 22 months.

Larry is awesome by the way.  He and Brady went to the grocery store yesterday and he got all the things he could remember I loved when I was pregnant.  Yogurt pretzels, almonds, Cliff bars, Kashi Go Lean Crunch, oatmeal, a veggie dipping tray and lots of fruit!  OH, and I can't forget the huge box of OREO'S!!!  Thanks babe - you're the best!!

All in all we are happy with this latest surprise and I think it's so neat that Mandy and I are pregnant at the same time again.  Like last time, it looks like we are a week apart.  ;)

What is it lately about the "Next Blog"???

Okay, lately when I hit the "Next Blog" button on my blogspot.com page it sends me to tribute blogs of mother's or families of children lost to cancer or some other life threatening disease.  Where are the photography blogs or the wannabe fashionista's blogging about new or trendy products they tried just to serve the public interest?

It's usually around 10 or 11 pm so I'm tired already and now here come the water works.  Not to be in any way disrespectful, but it's like the train wreck pun...I can't stop reading them.  Of course it makes me think how I would feel if I lost any of my babies and how gut wrenching that must be on a daily basis.  The one last week was about a little boy who had died from cystic fibrosis.  The idea of watching and waiting for that last moment was unbearable.  Oddly enough I had been talking to Mandy about the CF walk and Sam's new job with the CF Foundation.  So reading it was so emotional.  It made me think of Brady and how life without him would be.  It made me think of Mandy and her family and really put in perspective what they went through.  Today was a little girl not even 3 years old yet, a twin, who passed from stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer 5 weeks after diagnosis.  The unimaginable has happened and, as one mom put it, they have been put back together with scotch tape and safety pins waiting for the wind to blow them apart.  I guess the only positive thing to say about the ones I've seen is that you can see somewhat of a healing process happen through their blogging about all that is happening around them good, bad, ranting or thanking God for keeping them close in their time of need.

I guess my point is that more than the normal feeling of being super blessed with my three, I have been extra thankful and grateful for them, for Larry and for how strong we are as a whole.  Since the first breath of our first child being without any of them is NOT an option.  We made a pact with God - send them home and we'll deal with whatever comes next.  I'm humbled He thinks enough of us to keep up his end so far!

Even though it's late I'm gonna go kiss them all right now......

Potty Project Complete!

This morning is the second morning that Brady woke up dry and went pee first thing!  He has been doing so well with going to the restroom and wearing big boy underwear.  I am so proud of him.  So this morning he and Larry went to the store and bought the rug he was working toward.  He is so proud of it and doesn't want the girls to play on because they might mess it up - his words, not mine!  After that he and his dad went swimming just the two of them.  They both had a great time but he was excited to get home to play with his new rug.  He put his entire train track together on the outer part of it and had all the trains going at one time.  He had ALL his cars on one road or another on the rug.  He said they were all very busy working.

Way to go Brady!

Sleeping in, a new Button and Project Potty Training still in progress...

I am SOOO glad school is out for the next almost 3 months.  I know Angelina and Brady love it, but I have to say not have to get up at 6 to feed the big girl is pretty great!  This morning I actually got to catch up on my sleep.  Larry got up early and took the monitor with him.  He did all the morning routine and I slept until 8:30!  It was so nice to just wake up and not to someone else's voice or the alarm.  He made me an awesome cup of coffee and yummy breakfast, the kids were behaving themselves, all was right with the world.  Most of the rest of the day was kind of lazy, but I did have to take Angelina to have her G-Button changed.  I hate having to do this because it's kind of painful for her.  She doesn't like it one bit, and today she realized where we were about 1 minute after we got there and started to do that whining cry.  There was another little boy there about her age so he decided he needed to cry with her.  Oddly enough, he was having the same thing done. I mean, it's a pediatric surgeon's office so they do visits for all kinds of procedures and it's not like there are just an abundance of kids in this area with g-buttons.  Anyway, she cried and cried, but got over it after about five minutes then fell asleep in the car.

Brady has been in potty-training mode for the past week.  It started hardcore because we were all in the little office in our house playing and he just pooped in his pants right there.  I mean there's a bathroom 8 feet down the hall and he couldn't even say anything.  I was completely over it.  So I cleaned him up and told him that for the next little while when we are home he was going to be naked on bottom so he could tell me when he needed to go to the bathroom.  We sat down and made a goal chart out of colored paper and markers.  He has wanted this rug from Home Depot for a while now.  It's the kind that has a little town on it with streets so he can drive his toy cars on it.  Anyway, when we go there he begs for the rug, but we tell him no not right now.  So that is the motivation.  It's written on his chart and he has to read it every time we put a check mark on it for going pee or poop.  There's even a row for accidents to be checked off.  He knows that when he can wear underwear without messing in them we will go to the store and reward him.   He has been doing pretty well so now he wears underwear around the house.  He has only had a few accidents that had to be cleaned up but now he really seems to be getting the hang of it.  He can usually get through nap time remaining dry but night is still a no go.  Last year I bought those "plastic on the outside, cotton on the inside" potty training pants and he wears those to bed over his underwear.  He is starting to understand that if he drinks water at night before he goes to bed his pants will be wet in the morning so tonight he only had a sip of water.  We'll see how that turns out in the morning.  I'm proud of him for trying so hard to be a big boy!

I have a lot of posts to catch up on so hit the delete button if you get tired of seeing them!

Backyard happenings

The kids really enjoy being outside now that the dirt is gone and plush grass has grown through.  Here are a few moments of fun in the backyard....

You can't see her but Brady is having an in depth conversation with our 4 year old neighbor, Caitlyn, through the fence.  Sometimes she will climb on top of her swing set and peek over and they talk as well.  It's so funny to watch because they are really engaged in their pre-school talk about who each other is and where they are in the yard!

Me (Larry) and Mini-me hangin out in the backyard.

The only way to have real fun in the backyard is in your drawers and rain boots!

These were taken before the grass grew in over the dirt.  Brady was singing "lets get grubby, goin' outside and we're gonna get grubby".  It was so cute!

Obviously this was a day to hang at the house sans makeup and fixed hair!

I love the grass but hate the bright sunlight!!!

Playing on the new walk with my dozers!!!

Oohh, the bricks feel good on my little feet!

Angelina has been watching Brady roll down the hill and now she wants to give it a try herself!  :)

This was such a pretty picture Larry took at dusk from the backyard!

Happy 1st Birthday Cirstyn Delaney!

Can you believe it, our baby girl turned 1 this week! Her party was yesterday 5/15 at her new home and she had such a good time.  OMG this girl is such a clothes horse!  Of course she does look fabulous in anything she wears so she is VERY excited to don her new threads.

Her grandparents were on the same page with the seating theme :).  She has a new chair for the table, which she has fallen in love with, thanks to Nana and Papa and she has a big girl car seat because her Grams and Papa think she is ready to be a big girl in the van!  She'll be looking pretty as a picture in the handmade zebra-print dress and bow from the English's, sun dresses from Jen and Keith and too cute to get dirty in shorts outfits from Madi and Sofie, Jolie and Nina, Brandi and Chloe, Brad, The Gabriel's, and Jen and Keith!  Of course life couldn't go on unless she has not just one but two new swimsuits courtesy of Bobby and Gail, and Brandie as well.  Angelina and Bradyn picked out a cute Touch and Learn Turtle, although I think their intentions were purely selfish because they have been enjoying it as well!

She loved her birthday cake and it looked like she recognized herself in the picture!  She blew out her candles with a little help from Brady, Luke, Addison and Mommy.

Yummy, yummy cake in my tummy!

The banner that Uncle Rick made was spectacular and a perfect greeting for everyone as they came in!  He's the best!
Thanks Brandie and Chloe for all your help (with this and everything else lately!), Larry and I really appreciate it!!  Thank you to everyone for making her special day even more special!

More 1st Birthday pics....
